Abstract

Orchid is one of the popular flower ornamental plants because of its unique floral beauty, exotic and relatively long-lasting flower compared to other flowering ornamental plants. Entrepreneurs and orchid enthusiasts generally order orchid bottled seeds from Java because there is no laboratory for orchid plant seed production in tissue culture. Household-scale tissue culture with cheaper facilities can be a solution for orchid breeding. Activities of developing household-scale orchid tissue culture in the Laboratory on Bioscience and Plant Reproductive Biotechnology in the Teaching Industry of Hasanuddin University have begun in recent years depending on funding and most recently with funding from Kemenristekdikti in 2019 in the form of the Campus Intellectual Product Unit Development Program (PPM-PPUPIK). Activities undertaken include providing orchid seedlings in vitro and training on household-scale tissue culture to orchid enthusiasts and nurseries. After participating in the training, participants are expected to obtain knowledge and skills about tissue culture quite well and be able to practice the propagation and acclimatization of orchids and their cultivation with simple equipment. Household-scale tissue culture is easier to understand and has inexpensive materials and tools that can change the mindset of participants who previously thought tissue culture was expensive.
